Inflammation is the body's reaction to physical, chemical or biological injury. Normally this process localises the problem and results in regeneration or repair of damaged tissue. Lyprinol® helps to reduce inflammation by inhibiting the action of enzymes involved in the inflammatory pathway called the LOX pathway. By inhibiting these enzymes Lyprinol® can reduce both inflammation and pain, and yet does not interfere with the more positive aspects of the normal inflammatory response. Lyprinol® has a more complex lipid structure compared to other marine oils. This includes the presence of a number of compounds known to be anti-inflammatory, such as omega-3 fatty acids. Lutein and zeaxanthin are carotenoids found in the human eye. The highest concentration is found in the macular area of the retina. The macula is responsible for central vision. Our ability to recognise faces, read, drive, see colours and contrast are all dependent on a healthy macula. They are also present in the lens. In the macula, lutein and zeaxanthin form a layer of yellow pigment called the macular pigment, which serves as an effective natural filter of the most damaging light (near-to-UV blue light) that reaches the retina.

It also contains betacarotene, as betacarotene absorption may be reduced when taking plant sterols. Plant sterols are fat-like compounds with a chemical structure that is very similar to cholesterol. However compared to cholesterol, plant sterols are only minimally absorbed. They are naturally present in everyday foods especially in vegetables, fruit, nuts, grains and cooking oils.
