Bone & Joint Support

Bone and joint support covers the products people use to look after bone strength and joint comfort. Women after menopause, people over fifty, tradespeople and weekend athletes ask about it most. Some are following up a bone density scan with their doctor. Others simply notice stiff knees after a long walk.

Calcium and vitamin D are the two people ask about first, as tablets, capsules and chewables. Both sit with our calcium and vitamins A to Z shelves. Joint formulas built around glucosamine, chondroitin and turmeric come from ranges such as Herbs of Gold, Metagenics and Blackmores. Turmeric and the other herbs sit in our herbal supplements range. Collagen powders are another option people ask about, and fish oils are often taken alongside them.

Start with what your doctor has already advised, especially after a scan or a fracture. Calcium can change how some medicines are absorbed, so timing matters. Ask our pharmacists to go through your current list with you. For a longer review of your supplements, book our integrative pharmacy consult.

Frequently asked questions

How much calcium do I need each day?

Most adults are advised around 1,000 mg of calcium a day, and more after menopause. Food counts first, so add up dairy, tinned fish and fortified drinks before you supplement. Your doctor or pharmacist can tell you what the gap looks like for you. Splitting the dose across the day suits some people better than one large tablet.

Should I take vitamin D with calcium?

Many people do, and plenty of products combine the two in one tablet. Vitamin D helps your body absorb calcium from food. Levels drop over winter, and for people who cover up or work indoors. A blood test through your doctor is the way to know where you sit. Ask us which combination suits your routine.

What is in a joint supplement?

Glucosamine and chondroitin are the traditional pairing, and many formulas now add turmeric or curcumin. Others use collagen, MSM or fish oil instead. Strengths vary widely, and so do the directions on the pack. Read the label before you start, and tell us what else you take. Some formulas are not suitable if you react to shellfish.

Do you stock practitioner bone and joint formulas?

Yes. Eagle Bone Matrix Support, Metagenics joint formulas and Orthoplex powders sit in our practitioner range, alongside everyday brands. Some are recommended by a practitioner and some you can buy directly. Strengths and forms differ, so have the name of anything you have been recommended handy. We can check it against what we carry.

Can I take these with my other medicines?

Sometimes, and sometimes not. Calcium changes how some medicines are absorbed, so spacing them apart matters. Fish oil and turmeric are worth mentioning if you take blood thinners. Ask our pharmacists to go through a full list of what you take, supplements included. Speak with us first if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.

Always read the label and follow the directions for use.
