Children's Health

Children's health covers the everyday things parents ask a pharmacist about. Vitamins, probiotics, fussy eating and the run of winter bugs are the usual list. Most people arrive with a specific age in mind. Doses for children are set by age and weight. The right product is not an adult one in a smaller amount.

Children's vitamins come as chewables, gummies and liquids, from ranges such as Herbs of Gold, Brauer and Nature's Way. Children's probiotics come as sachets and powders you stir into food. Omega-3 for children sits in our fish oils range as flavoured liquids and chewable capsules. You can also browse children's medicines.

Ask before you buy if your child is under two, takes other medicines, or has a health condition. Never split an adult product to make a child's dose. Our pharmacists can read the label with you and work out the right amount. For an appointment from home, book a telehealth consultation.

Frequently asked questions

What age can my child start a multivitamin?

It depends on the product, because each one is made for an age range. Some liquids are made for toddlers and some chewables for school age children. Read the age on the front of the pack before anything else. If your child is under two, or eats very little, ask us or your doctor first.

Are gummies the same as chewable tablets?

Both are made to be easy to take, and the choice usually comes down to what your child will accept. Gummies often contain sugar or sugar alcohols, and chewables sometimes carry more per dose. Keep either well out of reach, because children treat them as lollies. Stick to the amount written on the pack.

Do you stock children's probiotics?

Yes. We carry children's probiotics as sachets and powders, from ranges such as Activated Probiotics, BioCeuticals and Herbs of Gold. Some are made for babies and some for older children, so check the age on the pack. Storage differs between products, and a few need the fridge. Ask us which suits your child's age.

Can I give my child an adult supplement in a smaller dose?

Please do not. Adult products can contain ingredients or strengths that are not suitable for children, and splitting a tablet is not accurate. Iron products in particular must be kept well away from children. Ask our pharmacists to find an age appropriate option instead.

When should I see someone rather than buy something?

See your doctor if your child has a fever that will not settle, is not drinking, or seems unusually drowsy. Babies under three months with a fever need to be seen the same day. A nurse practitioner telehealth appointment helps when getting to a clinic is hard. Our pharmacists will tell you when that is the right call.

Always read the label and follow the directions for use.
