Hair, Skin & Nails

Hair, skin and nails support covers the supplements people take for hair condition and brittle nails. Skin that needs extra care belongs here too. People often ask about it after a stressful year, after a baby, or in their forties and fifties. Others are topping up a skincare routine from the inside.

Collagen powders and capsules are where most people start. Designs for Health, BioCeuticals and Herbs of Gold all carry one. Biotin and silica formulas sit on our vitamins A to Z shelf. The wider collagen and beauty supplements range sits next to it. Zinc and vitamin C are worth a look as well. If you would rather work from the outside, browse our skincare pages.

Hair and nails grow slowly, so a supplement is a daily routine rather than a short course. Tell us what else you take, because beauty formulas often double up on vitamin A or zinc. Sudden hair shedding or a changing mole belongs with your doctor. For a supplement review, book our integrative pharmacy consult.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between marine and bovine collagen?

Marine collagen is made from fish and bovine collagen from cattle. Both come as powders you stir into a drink, and as capsules. Marine suits people who avoid beef, and bovine suits people who avoid seafood. Neither is suitable if you react to the source it comes from. Check the label, and ask us if you are unsure.

What do biotin and silica formulas contain?

Biotin is one of the B group vitamins and a common ingredient in hair, skin and nail formulas. Silica formulas usually pair it with zinc or vitamin C. Most people get plenty of biotin from food, so it is worth asking whether you need more. High doses can affect some blood test results, including thyroid tests.

Which supplements do people take for their skin?

Collagen, zinc, vitamin C and silica formulas come up most often, and some people add a fish oil. Traditional herbal formulas for skin that needs extra care are popular too. What suits you depends on your skin, your age and what you already use. Ask our pharmacists, and have the products you use now handy.

Can I take a beauty supplement while pregnant?

Check with your doctor or pharmacist before you start anything during pregnancy or breastfeeding. Some beauty formulas contain vitamin A or herbs that are not suitable at that time. A pregnancy specific multivitamin is usually the better starting point. Ask our pharmacists to look at the pack or the product name with you.

How do I choose between a powder and a tablet?

Powders mix into water, coffee or a smoothie, and usually carry a larger dose per serve. Tablets and capsules are simpler to travel with and simpler to remember. Taste matters more than people expect with powders, so read the flavour on the label. The choice is mostly about what you will keep taking each day.

Always read the label and follow the directions for use.
