Pain & Inflammation Support

Pain and inflammation support covers the everyday products people use for aches, stiff joints and sore muscles. Office workers with a stiff neck, tradespeople, runners and people over fifty ask about it most. Some want something they can rub in. Others are after a supplement to sit alongside what their doctor has advised.

You can browse pain relief and topical pain relief in our medicines department. On the supplement side, turmeric and curcumin formulas sit in our herbal supplements range. Oriental Botanicals, Panaxea and Herbs of Gold all make one. Magnesium is popular with people whose muscles feel tight, and fish oils are often taken for joint comfort.

Pain that is new, severe or long lasting deserves a proper look rather than a supplement. Tell us what you already take, since turmeric and fish oil need care with blood thinners. Our pharmacists can talk through the options and when to see your doctor. For a supplement review, book our integrative pharmacy consult.

Frequently asked questions

What is in a joint and inflammation supplement?

Turmeric or curcumin is the most common base, often with black pepper extract added to aid absorption. Others are built around fish oil, glucosamine, PEA or magnesium. Strengths vary a great deal, so compare the label rather than the front of the box. Tell us what else you take, since turmeric needs care with blood thinners.

Can I take turmeric with my other medicines?

Ask our pharmacists to check your list with you. Turmeric and fish oil both need care alongside blood thinners. Turmeric also needs care with some other medicines, and high doses do not suit everyone. If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, ask before you start. Your doctor should know what you take.

How do topical products differ from tablets?

A topical product goes on the skin over the sore area, and a tablet is taken by mouth. Some people prefer topical because it avoids swallowing another tablet. Read the directions, since some are not for broken skin or for young children. Do not apply heat over a topical product. Ask us what suits your situation.

Do you stock practitioner pain and inflammation formulas?

Yes. Curcumin formulas from Oriental Botanicals and Panaxea sit in our practitioner range. So do PEA products from Metagenics and Orthoplex, with Herbs of Gold on the everyday shelves. Some are recommended by a practitioner and some you can buy directly. Ask our pharmacists to check what we carry for anything you have been recommended.

When should I see a doctor about pain?

Book with your doctor if pain is severe, follows an injury, or has lasted more than a few days. The same goes for pain with fever or numbness, or a joint that is hot and swollen. Do not keep taking over the counter medicines for weeks without advice. We will tell you when a supplement is not the answer.

Always read the label and follow the directions for use.
