Thyroid Support

Thyroid support covers the nutrient formulas people take to look after normal thyroid function. Most arrive after a blood test, or after their doctor mentioned iodine or selenium. Others eat little seafood or dairy and want to cover the gap. The thyroid is checked by a blood test, not by how you feel.

Iodine and selenium are the two nutrients people come for. Between them they come as drops, sprays, capsules and tablets. Ranges such as BioCeuticals, Orthoplex, Herbs of Gold and Metagenics all carry one. You can browse them with our minerals. A daily multivitamin usually includes both in smaller amounts. Zinc and B group vitamins sit on our vitamins A to Z shelf.

Iodine and selenium are nutrients, not a substitute for medical advice or for thyroid medicine. A high dose of iodine does not suit everyone, so please ask before you start. If you take thyroid medicine, timing and interactions matter. For a longer supplement review, book our integrative pharmacy consult.

Frequently asked questions

What do iodine and selenium do?

Both are nutrients the body uses in normal thyroid function, and both come from food first. Seafood, dairy and iodised salt are the common sources of iodine, and brazil nuts of selenium. A supplement is for filling a gap rather than for working something out yourself. Your doctor uses a blood test to check your thyroid.

Should I start iodine without a blood test?

Ask your doctor first, particularly if you already take thyroid medicine. Too much iodine causes problems of its own, and more is not better. The amount in a pregnancy multivitamin is set for that purpose and is a different question. If you are considering high strength drops, ask our pharmacists to talk it through.

Which forms of iodine and selenium do you carry?

Iodine and selenium between them come as drops, sprays, capsules and tablets, and the amount per dose varies widely. Drops suit people who want a small adjustable amount. Tablets and capsules are simpler to remember. Practitioner ranges such as BioCeuticals and Orthoplex sit alongside everyday brands on our shelves. Ask us to compare two labels with you.

Can I take these with thyroid medicine?

Raise it with your doctor before you add anything. Several supplements, including iron, calcium and high dose iodine, need spacing apart from thyroid medicine. Timing across the day usually sorts it out, and we can help you set that up. Ask our pharmacists to work through your full list, supplements included.

Where can I have a thyroid blood test collected?

Your doctor or nurse practitioner writes the request, and the sample is collected at a collection centre. We also offer a collection service by appointment for people with a request form. Results go directly back to whoever requested them. Book ahead to keep the wait short.

Always read the label and follow the directions for use.
