Fertility and hormone balance covers preconception planning and the monthly cycle. Couples getting ready to try, women tracking their cycle, and people whose cycles have changed all look here. Men are part of this too, and often overlooked. This page brings together the supplements and tests customers ask us about.
Preconception formulas sit in our pregnancy and breastfeeding range, usually built around folic acid, iodine and iron. Brands such as Blackmores Conceive Well Gold are asked for by name. Our women's supplements shelf carries cycle and hormone formulas from ranges such as Herbs of Gold and JSHealth. Men's supplements often centre on zinc and antioxidants.
Timing, sleep, weight and stress all feed into this, so supplements are only one part. Start folic acid before you try, as it is recommended in the months beforehand. Our pharmacists can check that what you are taking is suitable. For tests, referrals and a longer consult, book our women's health consult.
Standard advice is at least one month before you try, and three months is often suggested. Folic acid is the main reason, with iodine close behind. Male partners often start at the same time, since sperm development takes about three months. Ask your doctor if you take regular medicines or have a health condition.
What is usually in a preconception or prenatal formula?
Folic acid and iodine are the core, at doses set for pregnancy. Most also carry iron, zinc, vitamin D and B group vitamins. Some add omega-3 or a probiotic, either in the tablet or as a second product. Check that you are not doubling up on vitamin A from another supplement.
What do hormone balance supplements actually contain?
Usually a mix of B vitamins, minerals such as zinc and magnesium, and traditional herbal ingredients. Formulas differ a lot, and so do the doses. They are not a substitute for looking into why a cycle has changed. If your cycle has changed noticeably, please see your doctor. We are happy to read a label with you.
Do I need iodine as well as folic acid?
Most preconception formulas include both, because iodine intake is often low in Australia and pregnancy raises the need. Check the label for the amount rather than assuming. If you have been told to watch your iodine intake, ask your doctor first. Our pharmacists can read the panel with you and check it against anything else you take.
Can men get support here too?
Yes. Men's formulas usually focus on zinc, selenium, CoQ10 and antioxidants, with practitioner ranges available. Heat, alcohol, smoking and weight all play a part, which is worth knowing before buying anything. Our pharmacists can go through the options without any fuss. Nurse practitioner clinics can arrange pathology if it is needed.
